Our Goal |
In Fall 2015, Sandy Spring Friends School students and faculty sat down to discuss worrying divisions in the SSFS, along with their local community. Specifically, we noticed how groups from different neighboring organizations--like our school, religious centers, and public schools all on the same street--had little to no interaction, and often misconceptions of each other based simply on a lack of information.
Expanding this idea, we realized that many of the patterns of distrust and fear in our society boiled down to otherization and hate, and we were determined to make a difference--even a small one. After an offer of support from the Peace Committee at the Sandy Spring Monthly Meeting (Society of Friends/Quakers), we began the planning stages of what would become the first annual Youth Peace Conference at Sandy Spring Friends School. |
Youth Peace Conference aims to work towards peace by connecting students of different communities for a day of social justice work.
